Why study abroad as an Environmental Studies major?
The Environmental Studies Program at Rutgers offers an extraordinarily degree of flexibility. While Rutgers offers a wide range of courses to fit in the degree, we cannot cover everything. By studying abroad, you get the opportunity to explore a wider variety of approaches to the discipline. It also opens up the possibility to conduct senior research in another country.
How to study abroad as an Environmental Studies major
- Plan: It will take a couple of months from the idea to going abroad.
- Attend an information session by the Rutgers Study Abroad program
- Make a plan for how to manage financially. Several options exist. Spend some time exploring the Rutgers Study abroad program’s website.
- Make an academic plan. Explore the pre-approved courses and programs on the Study Abroad website. Explore other universities that you are interested in as well.
- Work with the Environmental Studies advising team to get help with your academic plan, suggestions for courses to take, and get pre-approvals
When to study abroad as an as a Environmental Studies major
We recommend that students study abroad in their junior or senior year. At that time, most students have taken one or more introductory courses and can benefit from taking upper-level courses at Study Abroad universities. Several of Rutgers study abroad universities offer upper-level courses that you won’t find at Rutgers. In addition, this is also an excellent opportunity to plan senior research in a fieldsite outside the United States.
When you study abroad, please work with the Environmental Studies advising team to ensure you fulfill all program requirements.

- Reach out to the Environmental Studies advising team to get your courses evaluated.
